Residential Renovation

This project was a complete renovation to an existing property. The house went from a traditional style to a modern sophisticated style using a minimal yet effective colour palette.

Attention to detail can be seen in the unique light fittings, cupboard details and the final showcase of the semi-floated engineered oak staircase with glass balustrade.

blog articles

I get asked many times if I judge a person's home from the moment I walk in and the honest answer is - no, not unless you ask for my opinion. I may notice certain things, that is how I am trained to critically assess the built environment but it is by no means a reflection of what I think personally about a space. Professionally though, I could have many or even no thoughts on it at all.

With that said, here are some thoughts on how to look at your home through an interior designer's perspective, namely mine and I am by no means the final say on the matter but I do like to offer a unique perspective.

1. I always tell people who immediately apologise for the mess or clutter of their home when I walk in - "No need to apologise for the mess, it shows your home is lived in and reflects how life can be naturally messy" We can cover some tips further down the line on how to clean up mess in a more appealing way. Remember my role is not to judge the day-to-day messiness but to assess the space, the lighting, colours, textures, finishes and spatial layout of furniture and fixtures.

2. Your home should reflect your personality and style. You may say you do not have style, but everyone does - it just looks different but it is still innately unique to you. Think about some styles that you would like your home to reflect, these would be minimalist, traditional, art deco, modern, contemporary, mid-century modern to name a few. It helps to have your vision for the space going forward rooted in a design style or theory - this creates a strong foundation for the design.

3. Don't feel the need to over-clutter or have lots of furniture just to fill up the space. Okay, now this is a slightly more personal opinion but true nonetheless. Think carefully about the furniture, art and decor you want in the space. The old saying of "less is more" speaks volumes. Crowding your space with objects for the sake of having them does not create a peaceful and beautiful environment and it can add to the general chaos of life.

4. Colour and textures. If you are unsure of playing with colour, go for neutral tones on the walls and bold accents for decor. You can use these accents as throw pillows and blankets, decor accessories and if you are feeling extra brave - try some wallpaper. Now, when I say bold I do not necessarily mean fluorescents and vibrant patterns. Bold for you could be just a soft hue and texture just to add a bit of colour.

5. Plant life. Not everyone can keep indoor plants alive and I am certainly one of them. Fear not, as there are a myriad of living and artificial options out there. The benefits of plant life in your space is that it creates a sense of natural beauty, most of us gravitate towards the outdoors and get a sense of calm and refreshment from being exposed to nature. So it would make sense that bringing a little bit of nature inside would have the same calming effect.
