Residential Renovation

This project was a complete renovation to an existing property. The house went from a traditional style to a modern sophisticated style using a minimal yet effective colour palette.

Attention to detail can be seen in the unique light fittings, cupboard details and the final showcase of the semi-floated engineered oak staircase with glass balustrade.

What is sustainable design?

Sustainable Design aims to reduce a negative impact on the environment, with many of us becoming increasingly aware of how important it is to reduce waste - we can also achieve it when designing, decorating and building our homes.

1. BUY LOCALLY

Buying locally means that you not only support small businesses which are important in South Africa, but it also means less impact on the environment due to shipping.

Cost implications - yes local could appear to be more costly than buying a big-name brand but you are reducing your carbon footprint, keeping local South Africans employed and getting a good quality product and not spending money on shipping fees.

Buying local not just means from your nearest store, check that it is made locally as well. You will notice a sticker with the national flag on it and this is a great indicator to look out for.

SPOTLIGHT ON LOCAL RETAILERS WHO MANUFACTURE LOCALLY

  1. SHF - Living | SHF have recently started selling products manufactured locally as well. This is a great addition to the luxury furniture retailer. Look out for the little heart with South African flag.

  2. Ashanti | A wonderfully unique brand from Cape Town that have taken vibrant colours and materials to create fun and sustainable products. Have a look at their incredible video.

  3. Incanda | A local furniture manufacture of the most wonderful leather furniture sofas and more! Their quality is fantastic and stand the test of time.

  4. Monn | For beautiful rugs and carpets manufactured 100% locally.

2. BUY SUSTAINABLY

Sustainable products are not only products that have been manufactured locally (they could also be international) however their common traits would be that they are made from the following;

  1. Recycles products/ materials
  2. Natural materials
  3. Renewable materials
  4. Harmless & non-toxic materials

SPOTLIGHT ON SUSTAINABLE SUPPLIERS

  1. Incanda (mentioned above) creatively crafts products from off-cuts of their main leather items. Read more here
  2. Paintsmiths create a variety of environmentally conscious coatings for walls and floors. Many of their products are Zero VOC (Volatile Organic Compounds) - which although not fully sustainable, is better for the environment. See their ranges here
  3. House of Canvex produces wonderful range of fabrics that are made solely from 100% South African PET Waste and 100% RPET. Shop their ranges here
